BeeGFS Parallel Storage
BeeGFS is a network-based multi-Petabyte storage cluster for the UCI campus research community. It is being put in place so that researchers across UCI have a reliable and resilient location to store their research data and share with defined groups.
BeeGFS is single copy, high-performance storage. No special backup is available.
Accessible only from HPC3 as a regular filesystem for storing data on the cluster. There are a few separate BeeGFS storage pools which are mounted on the cluster as /dfs2 through /dfs6.
DFS filesystems must not be used to store personally-identifiable information that would fall under guidelines such as FERPA (e.g. Student data), and HIPAA (health-care data). If you are unsure if DFS is suitable for your data, please refer to general guidance for data security provided by the UCI Office of Research
2. Allocations: Shared and Private Areas
Users have access to the private and group-shared areas on BeeGFS.
No cost Private area: 1TB per account
Each user gets an allocation in /pub/<account> which is the same as /dfs6/pub/<accocunt>.

UCI Faculty members can have low-cost recharge allocation(s) to fulfill their needs. These group areas are in /dfsX/group-lab-path. The storage owner (PI) can specify additional users who have read/write capability on the filesystem. Each area is initially set with the group sticky bit set so that only allowed users can access this area. We advise users to NOT change permissions on the directories and files when writing in the group area.
3. Howto purchase more BeeGFS storage
Researchers who require more capacity than the baseline allocation, can purchase additional capacity, billed annually via campus recharge. The recharge is computed on the basis of recovering the cost of additional space. These campus funds pay for the people, the baseline infrastructure, and vendor maintenance required to provide the robust infrastructure.

We will create an MOU and sent to the PI for signing and will ask for a recharge index. Once a PI signs an MOU for the desired amount of storage, the allocation is created on one of the DFS systems.
